Based at Russell, in the historic Bay of Islands, this location offers the perfect place for long exposure photography, wild coastlines, waterfalls and classic jetties.
Join Richard Young and Ken Wright on a four-day long exposure photography workshop showcasing the best of Northlands coastal scenery. Long exposure photography requires the use of neutral density ‘ND’ filters to enable longer shutter speeds, which can capture the beautiful and often surprising effects of movement in the water and clouds. Capturing images like this requires good technique. By joining this workshop, you’ll be guided advance use of in ND filters along with HDR techniques, and in the process learn how to take compelling coastal photographs.
Capture to Print Masterclass Workshop: Our long exposure masterclass is designed to perfect the techniques of long exposure, high dynamic range (HDR) and fine art black and white photography; with dedicated tuition sessions and notes on these subjects. The workshop concludes with a processing session and printing a 17x22" fine art print of one of your images using the latest Epson SC-P800 printer. We will also have a number of Benro Long Exposure filters kits along with Nikon cameras & lenses available for shared use during the workshop to help you capture some stunning coastal photographs.

  • Day 1

    The tour starts after a mid-morning pick up from Whangarei, to work in with flights from all the main centers. Afterward, we drive to Russell and the historic Duke of Marlborough Hotel, our home for the next three nights in the picturesque Bay of Islands. During European colonisation, Russell was briefly the capital of New Zealand and features many historic sites. After arriving in the hotel we use the conference room run through our introductory programme for the finer points of capturing a long exposure photography and advanced settings for HDR photography, The day ends with a sunset shoot over the picturesque coastline, on one of the many beautiful bays close to Russell.
    Transport: The workshop includes return transport from Whangarei, or you can choose to meet us in Russell.
  • Day 2

    An early start enables a sunrise shoot before we head back to the hotel for breakfast. A chartered boat today enables us to explore the Bay of Islands by sea, including parts of the coastline not accessible by road. We will send the day stopping at a number of the beautiful islands to capture these at our own pace, utilising the long exposure and HDR techniques that we have learned to make some unique photographs.
  • Day 3

    Today we will venture further afield to explore the beautiful Hokianga Harbour, stopping on route to captures some of the stunning waterfalls located around the Bay of Islands. The rugged coastlines and picturesque jetties of this area are well suit black and white ‘fine art style’ photographs. We also capture images of intriguing round boulders, similar to the iconic ones found in the South Island at Moeraki.
  • Day 4

    Another early morning sunrise shoot across the Bay of Islands allows you to hone your field technique and capture some more of the areas stunning beaches. After breakfast, we will then use the hotel's conference room for an in-depth post-production session covering the processing of long exposure, black and white images and merging HDR shots. We will help you process your best image from the workshop and produce a finished 17x22" fine art print to take home. In the afternoon, we drive back to Whangarei to meet connecting flights to main centers.



  • Class Size

    Maximum group size of 8. Groups of 3-4 will be led by only one tutor and groups of 5-8 will be led by two tutors. Limiting class sizes ensures we provide you with the best learning environment possible, including expert guidance, instruction and personal attention, according to your learning style.
  • Itinerary

    Our exact schedule will be determined according to the whole group’s photographic objectives and the weather. We keep a flexible itinerary to accommodate this. We will spend the workshop instructing and shooting, often from before dawn until after dark. At some point during the weekend the tutors will give a lecture on their photographic ability and how you can apply their systems and vision to develop your own unique style.
  • Transport

    We will meet the group at Whangarei Airport at the start of the workshop and provide transport to the whole workshop and return you to Whangarei at the end of the workshop.

  • Physical Difficulty

    A minimum level of physical activity is necessary to enjoy the workshop. All locations we shoot will be within an easy walk along the coastline, but sometimes over rocky beaches carrying your own equipment. If fitness or mobility is an issue please let us know - there are often locations which offer great shooting possibilities close to the road or our accommodation, or sometimes we also have the option to split the group.
  • Equipment & Experience

    Ideally, you will have a basic knowledge of photography and be comfortable adjusting camera settings such as aperture and shutter speed. An aim of the workshop is to give you more confidence in the creative control of camera settings and shooting in manual mode. We will have a brief session at the start of the workshop, covering camera settings and controls, to be sure everyone is up to speed.

  • Booking & Payment

    A non-refundable deposit of NZD$400.00 is required to reserve your space for the workshop. The remaining balance is due 14 days prior to the start of the workshop. You may pay in full at time of booking, the balance (minus the deposit) will remain fully refundable until 14 days before the workshop.
