Our 4-day Astro Masterclass Workshop is an ideal programme to expand your skills in Astro, Timelapse and Panoramic photography with highly acclaimed astrophotographer Mark Gee along with Richard Young.
We will base ourselves in Twizel within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, the clear skies found in this part of the world are like nothing else in New Zealand. Very limited light pollution means the views of the night sky seem to stretch on as far as the eye can see, with the clearest, darkest and most spectacular night sky in New Zealand and the perfect location for astrophotography! The workshop dates have been picked to ensure a new moon and winter offers the best conditions astrophotography.
During the workshop will visit New Zealand’s premier astronomical research centre, the Mount John Observatory, to learn more about the night sky and photograph the constellations.
The workshop includes return transport from Queenstown, or you can meet us at Twizel.
Capture to Print Masterclass Workshop: Our Astrophotography Masterclass is designed to perfect the techniques astrophotography, timelapse photography and panoramic photography; with dedicated tuition sessions and notes on these subjects. The workshop concludes with a processing session and printing a 17x22" fine art print of one of your images using the latest Epson SC-P800 printer. We will also have a number of Benro Long Exposure filters kits along with Nikon cameras & lenses available for shared use during the workshop to help you capture some stunning photographs.

Night Tour at Mount John Observatory
We will pick you up early from Queenstown airport/hotel or you can meet us in Twizel at lunch time. After assembling at our comfortable conference room in the MacKenzie Country Hotel, we will run through an introductory programme for the finer points of working in manual mode and advanced camera settings astrophotography and cover workflows on panoramic and timelapse photography. This evening will see us heading out for our first sunset and night time shoot in the Dark Sky Reserve over the shores of Lake Pukaki.
We will spend today exploring Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. The day will be taken up alternating between locations in the park and covering and doing some timelapse and panoramic photography. We will have dinner at Mt Cook village, heading out after dinner to capture the Milky Way above the Southern Alps before a late return to our accommodation.
Today we will venture further afield to explore more of the beautiful Mackenzie Country including around the shores of Lake Ohau and Lake Pukaki. This evening will see us going to to Tekapo for a trip up Mt John and a tour of the Mount John Observatory to photograph amazing star constellations, including the Southern Cross.
After breakfast, we will then use the hotel's conference room for an in-depth post-production session covering the processing of astrophotography, timelapse's and merging panoramas. We will help you process your best image from the workshop and produce a finished 17x22" fine art print to take home. The workshop will finish after lunch today, with return transport then provide back to Queenstown to meet with evening flights.
*The order of each day's shoot may change due to weather.
Maximum group size of 8. Groups of 3-4 will be led by only one tutor and groups of 5-8 will be led by two tutors. Limiting class sizes ensures we provide you with the best learning environment possible, including expert guidance, instruction and personal attention, according to your learning style.
Our exact schedule will be determined according to the whole group’s photographic objectives and the weather, we keep a flexible itinerary to accommodate this. We will spend the workshop instructing and shooting, often from before dawn until after dark. At some point, during the weekend the tutors will give a lecture on their photographic ability and how you can apply their systems and vision to develop your own unique style.
Start time on day 1: The workshop will start at 8am at Queenstown or 12 pm at Twizel on the first day.
Finish time on day 4: The workshop will finish at 1 pm at Mt Cook or 5 pm at Queenstown on the last day.
You can meet us at Twizel or we can provide return transport from Queenstown. Once at Twizel, we will provide transport for the workshop.
A minimum level of physical activity is necessary to enjoy the workshop. All locations we shoot will be within an easy walk along the coastline, but sometimes over rocky beaches carrying your own equipment. If fitness or mobility is an issue please let us know - there are often locations which offer great shooting possibilities close to the road or our accommodation, or sometimes we also have the option to split the group.
Equipment & Experience
Ideally, you will have a basic knowledge of photography and be comfortable adjusting camera settings such as aperture and shutter speed. An aim of the workshop is to give you more confidence in the creative control of camera settings and shooting in manual mode. We will have a brief session at the start of the workshop, covering camera settings and controls, to be sure everyone is up to speed.
