Wharariki Beach: New Zealand’s best Coastal Landscape?

Archway Islands

Tucked away in the northwest corner of the South Island lies a rugged gem of a photography location. With stunning island sculptures a short distance offshore and wind blown sand dunes, Wharariki Beach has a lot to offer a landscape photographer. I have made multiple trips to Wharariki to explore the beach and walking tracks on the surrounding farmland and have never left disappointed. There are a number of viewpoints to photograph the iconic Archway Islands and with the tide, surf and weather conditions constantly changing there are always new compositions to be found. It does take a little bit of effort to get there, about 2.5 hrs drive from Nelson on some windy roads with unsealed sections but if you have the time to make the trip, it’s definitely worthwhile. The rugged windswept section of coast can provide some breathtaking photography opportunities and you are bound to get some stunning photos.
